History

The 168th Wing provides the U.S. Air Force the capabilities of global reach and vigilance through the combined operations of air refueling, missile warning, and space surveillance. The unit maintains a constant watch and commitment for Pacific Air Forces, Northern and Air Force Space Commands, and the Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Region. The 168th Wing exemplifies the spirit of Total Force.

The 168th Wing is headquartered at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, and is a tenant unit to the 354th Fighter Wing. The 168th Wing’s space warning mission is conducted by the 213th Space Warning Squadron at Clear Air Force Station, Alaska, in partnership with the 13th Space Warning Squadron, a geographically separated unit (GSU) of the 21st Space Wing, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. Clear AFS is an 11,500-acre subarctic remote installation situated 80 miles southwest of Fairbanks, Alaska, along the Parks Highway. The installation security is controlled by the 268th Security Forces Squadron, 168th Wing, Alaska ANG.

168 ARW 90's

From a modest beginning in 1986, the unit has developed into a multidimensional wing, supporting state, national, and international missions for the governor of Alaska and the president of the United States. The 168th Wing has command and control over sixteen subordinate assigned units whose missions include all aircraft maintenance for the PACAF-gained tankers, providing financial, public affairs, transportation, contracting, and base supply resources, communications, data processing, organizational security, missile warning, and space surveillance, as well as disaster preparedness and air base operability. The groups also contain all personnel activities such as training, equal employment opportunity and recruiting, and limited diagnostic and therapeutic service in general medicine, flight medicine, bioenvironmental, environmental, and dental services.

Subordinate assigned units include four groups, the 168th Operations Group (OG), the 168th Maintenance Group (MXG), the 168th Mission Support Group (MSG), and the 168th Medical Group (MDG).  The 168 OG includes the 168th Air Refueling Squadron (ARS), the 168th Operations Support Squadron (OSS), and the 213th Space Warning Squadron at Clear Air Force Station, Alaska. The 168 MXG includes the 168th Maintenance Squadron (MXS), the 168th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (AMXS), and the 168th Maintenance Operations Flight (MOF).  Finally, the 168 MSG includes the 168th Security Forces Squadron (SFS), the 168th Logistics Readiness Squadron (LRS), the 168th Mission Support Flight (MSF), the 168th Communications Flight (CF), the 168th Civil Engineering Squadron, and the 268th Security Forces Squadron at Clear AFS, Alaska.

Because of Alaska's strategic location with regard to national defense, the mission and importance of the 168th Wing and the Alaska Air National Guard should continue to increase in the coming years.  The 168th Wing has a remarkably broad range of responsibilities that it fulfills in an exemplary manner, providing an outstanding example for all other Air National Guard units.  With a proven capacity to perform, we are ready to face the challenges of the future and are confident of our ability to accomplish any assigned mission.

ANG: A Short Story

The Air National Guard as we know it today -- a separate reserve component of the United States Air Force -- was a product of the politics of postwar planning and interservice rivalry during World War II. The men who planned and maneuvered for an independent postwar Air Force during World War II didn't place much faith in the reserves, especially the state-dominated National Guard.
